WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The DeMomentSomTres WordPress Export Posts With Images WordPress plugin through version 20220825 contains a critical authorization vulnerability. The plugin fails to properly validate user permissions when processing export requests for blog data. This vulnerability was discovered and publicly disclosed on December 21, 2023 (WPScan).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.1 (HIGH) and vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N. The issue stems from the plugin's failure to implement proper authorization checks when handling blog data export requests (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows any authenticated user, including those with minimal privileges such as subscribers, to export the entire contents of the blog. The exported data can include sensitive information such as restricted posts, unpublished content, and passwords of protected posts (WPScan).

The vulnerability can be exploited by making a request to the export endpoint at '/wp-admin/admin.php?dms3export=1'. The only requirement for exploitation is having an authenticated session, even with minimal privileges such as a subscriber role (WPScan).

Currently, there is no known fix available for this vulnerability. Users of the DeMomentSomTres WordPress Export Posts With Images plugin should consider disabling the plugin until a security patch is released (WPScan).
