CVE-2023-6561: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Featured Image from URL (FIFU) WordPress plugin contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2023-6561) in versions up to and including 4.5.3. The vulnerability was discovered in the featured image alt text functionality due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of the featured image alt text in the plugin. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (NVD, WPScan).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level privileges to exploit. The attacker needs to manipulate the featured image alt text to inject malicious scripts that will be executed when other users view the affected pages (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 4.5.4 of the Featured Image from URL (FIFU) plugin. Site administrators should update to this version or later to protect against this vulnerability (WPScan).
