WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The JobSearch WP Job Board plugin for WordPress contains a privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2024-11925) affecting all versions up to and including 2.6.7. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on November 28, 2024. This security flaw impacts the user account activation functionality of the plugin (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from improper user identity verification in the user_account_activation function. This authentication bypass vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.8 (CRITICAL) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating the highest severity level. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-288 (Authentication Bypass Using an Alternate Path or Channel) (NVD, Wordfence).

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to log in as any user on the system, including site administrators, if they know the user's email address. This gives attackers complete control over affected WordPress sites through unauthorized administrative access (NVD).

The vulnerability is highly exploitable as it requires no authentication or user interaction. An attacker only needs to know a target user's email address to exploit this vulnerability and gain unauthorized access to their account (NVD).

Users should immediately update the JobSearch WP Job Board plugin to a version newer than 2.6.7 if available. Until an update is installed, site administrators should consider disabling the plugin to prevent potential exploitation (NVD).
