WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Photo Gallery by 10Web WordPress plugin before version 1.8.33 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The vulnerability was discovered by Dmitrii Ignatyev and was assigned CVE-2024-13124. The issue stems from improper sanitization and escaping of certain settings within the plugin, affecting WordPress installations using this plugin (WPScan).

The vulnerability is classified as a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 3.5 (Low) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N. The issue specifically affects the gallery settings functionality where certain input fields are not properly sanitized or escaped (WPScan).

The vulnerability allows high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks, even in environments where the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, such as in multisite setups. This could potentially lead to client-side code execution in the context of other users' browsers (WPScan).

A proof of concept exists demonstrating the vulnerability exploitation. The attack can be executed by creating a new gallery with a malicious title containing JavaScript code, adding it to a gallery group, and triggering the XSS when hovering over the gallery title within the gallery group (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 1.8.33 of the Photo Gallery by 10Web WordPress plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the security risk (WPScan).
