CVE-2024-13701: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Liveticker (by stklcode) plugin for WordPress contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2024-13701) discovered in all versions up to and including 1.2.2. The vulnerability was disclosed on February 11, 2025, affecting the plugin's 'liveticker' shortcode functionality (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes in the plugin's 'liveticker' shortcode. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N according to Wordfence, while NIST assigned a slightly lower score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level privileges to exploit. The attack complexity is considered low, requiring network access and no user interaction according to the Wordfence assessment (Wordfence Advisory).

A patch has been released to address this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to version 1.2.3 or later of the Liveticker plugin (WordPress Patch).
