CVE-2024-21115: 
VirtualBox vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-21115 is a security vulnerability discovered in Oracle VM VirtualBox versions prior to 7.0.16. The vulnerability affects the Core component of Oracle Virtualization and was discovered by security researcher Cody Gallagher during the Pwn2Own Vancouver 2024 competition (ZDI, Security Online).

The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds (OOB) write vulnerability located in the DevVGA module, specifically within the vgaR3DrawBlank function called from vgaR3UpdateDisplay. The flaw involves a relatively bit clear on the heap from the VGA device and can be triggered with minimal system requirements of a single processor core and 32MB of VRAM, using the default graphics controller for Linux (VMSVGA). The vulnerability has received a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8, indicating high severity impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (NVD, Security Online).

A successful exploitation of this vulnerability can result in complete takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. Since VirtualBox is commonly used to run multiple virtual machines on a single host system, the compromise could potentially affect other software running within those virtual machines. The vulnerability has significant impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system (NVD, Security Online).

The vulnerability is considered easily exploitable and requires a low-privileged attacker with logon access to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes.
