NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

An issue was discovered in the CheckUser extension in MediaWiki before 1.35.14, 1.36.x through 1.39.x before 1.39.6, and 1.40.x before 1.40.2. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability can occur via message definitions, for example in SpecialCheckUserLog (NVD, CVE).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting'). It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD).

The vulnerability allows attackers with access to MediaWiki namespace pages to inject malicious JavaScript code through message definitions in the CheckUser extension, potentially leading to cross-site scripting attacks (Phabricator).

The vulnerability requires the attacker to have permissions to edit MediaWiki namespace pages. The XSS vectors are present in several interfaces including Special:CheckUserLog, Special:CheckUser 'Get users', and Special:Investigate 'Timeline' (Phabricator).

The issue has been patched in MediaWiki versions 1.35.14, 1.39.6, 1.40.2, and 1.41.0. The fix involves properly escaping message definitions and adding HTML-containing messages to wgRawHtmlMessages configuration (Phabricator).
