PandasAI (pandas-ai) through version 1.5.17 contains a vulnerability in the GenerateSDFPipeline component within the synthetic_dataframe module. The vulnerability allows attackers to trigger arbitrary command execution through maliciously crafted dataframe content. This issue was discovered and reported in January 2024 (NVD).
The vulnerability stems from the SDFCodeExecutor component which executes Python code without proper validation checks. When using GenerateSDFPipeline, if the dataframe content is maliciously crafted, prompt injection can occur, leading to arbitrary code execution. The root cause is that the executor runs Python code directly without implementing any security controls or input validation (GitHub Issue).
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the system running the PandasAI library. This could potentially lead to system compromise, data theft, or other malicious activities depending on the system permissions under which the code is running (GitHub Issue).
Users should upgrade to a version newer than 1.5.17 once a patch is available. In the meantime, careful validation of input data and dataframe content should be implemented before passing it to the GenerateSDFPipeline component (NVD).
