CVE-2024-26141
Ruby vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2024-26141 affects Rack, a modular Ruby web server interface, versions 1.3.0 and later. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on February 21, 2024, with fixed versions 3.0.9.1 and 2.2.8.1 released to address the issue. The vulnerability affects applications using the Rack::File middleware or the Rack::Utils.byte_ranges methods, which includes Rails applications (Ruby Rails).

Technical details

The vulnerability allows attackers to craft specific Range headers that can cause a server to respond with unexpectedly large responses. When processing these Range headers, the server fails to properly validate the total size of requested ranges against the file size, potentially leading to excessive resource consumption. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 (HIGH) by NIST NVD and 5.8 (MEDIUM) by GitHub (NVD).

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to a denial of service (DoS) condition. When an attacker sends carefully crafted Range headers, the server may attempt to process and respond with data chunks that are larger than the original file size, potentially exhausting server resources (GitHub Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

The primary mitigation is to upgrade to the fixed versions: Rack 3.0.9.1 or 2.2.8.1. For users unable to upgrade immediately, patches have been provided for the two supported release series (3.0 and 2.2). No feasible workarounds have been identified for this issue other than upgrading to the patched versions (Ruby Rails).

Community reactions

Multiple organizations and vendors have responded to this vulnerability. Red Hat has issued security advisories and patches for affected products (Red Hat). Debian has also released security updates to address the vulnerability in their distributions (Debian). NetApp has conducted impact assessments across their product portfolio (NetApp).
