CVE-2024-2627:

A use-after-free vulnerability (CVE-2024-2627) was discovered in the Canvas component of Google Chrome versions prior to 123.0.6312.58. This security flaw was reported by an anonymous researcher on January 21, 2024, and was assigned a Medium severity rating by the Chromium security team (Chrome Blog).

The vulnerability is classified as a use-after-free issue affecting the Canvas component in Google Chrome. It received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 (High) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The flaw is tracked under CWE-416 (Use After Free) classification (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption through a specially crafted HTML page, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution within the context of the browser (NVD).

The vulnerability requires user interaction and can be exploited remotely through a crafted HTML page. The attacker needs to convince a user to visit a malicious webpage to trigger the vulnerability (NVD).

Google has addressed this vulnerability in Chrome version 123.0.6312.58. Users are advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the risk. The fix has been also incorporated into various Linux distributions including Fedora 38, 39, and 40 (Fedora Update).
