CVE-2024-27189: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The CVE-2024-27189 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the WP Social Widget WordPress plugin through version 2.2.5. The vulnerability was discovered by researcher LVT-tholv2k and publicly disclosed on February 28, 2024. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes in the plugin's shortcode functionality (Patchstack, WPScan).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) and has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L. The issue specifically affects the plugin's shortcode functionality, where insufficient input validation allows for the injection of malicious scripts (Patchstack).

The vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level permissions or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses an affected page, potentially leading to various security implications including unauthorized data access, session hijacking, or malicious redirects (WPScan).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level access to exploit. The attack complexity is considered low, requiring user interaction for successful exploitation (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.2.6 of the WP Social Widget plugin. Site administrators are advised to update to this version or later to remediate the security issue. It's worth noting that as of February 16, 2024, the plugin has been temporarily closed pending a full review (Patchstack).
