CVE-2024-27804: 
macOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-27804 is a security vulnerability affecting multiple Apple operating systems including iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5, tvOS 17.5, watchOS 10.5, macOS Sonoma 14.5, and visionOS 1.3. The vulnerability was discovered by Meysam Firouzi (@R00tkitSMM) and was addressed by Apple in May 2024 through improved memory handling in the AppleAVD component (Apple Security).

The vulnerability exists in the AppleAVD (Apple Audio Video Decoder) component and is related to improper memory handling. When exploited, an app may be able to cause unexpected system termination. The issue received a CVSS 3.1 Base Score of 5.5 (Medium) from NIST with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H. Additionally, CISA-ADP assessed it with a higher CVSS score of 8.1 (High) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

The vulnerability could allow an app to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This represents a significant security risk as it could potentially lead to complete system compromise if successfully exploited (Apple Security).

The vulnerability requires local access and user interaction to be exploited. While the vulnerability has been publicly disclosed, there are no reports of it being actively exploited in the wild (NVD).

Apple has addressed this vulnerability by implementing improved memory handling in the following updates: iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5, tvOS 17.5, watchOS 10.5, macOS Sonoma 14.5, and visionOS 1.3. Users are advised to update their devices to these versions to protect against potential exploitation (Apple Security).
