CVE-2024-29686
PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Server-side Template Injection (SSTI) vulnerability was discovered in Winter CMS v.1.2.3. The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code via a crafted payload to the CMS Pages field and Plugin components. However, this vulnerability is disputed by the vendor because the payload could only be entered by a trusted user, such as the owner of the server that hosts Winter CMS, or a developer working for them. The vulnerability was disclosed on March 29, 2024 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the template injection functionality of Winter CMS v.1.2.3. It can be exploited through the CMS Pages field and Plugin components where an authenticated user with appropriate permissions can inject template code. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.2 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating high impact but requiring high privileges (NVD).

Impact

If successfully exploited, the vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system. However, since this requires trusted user access, the real-world impact is limited to scenarios where a trusted user becomes malicious or their credentials are compromised (NVD).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires authentication with high privileges to exploit. A proof of concept exists demonstrating that an authenticated user can inject template expressions like {{7*7}} which will be evaluated by the system. More complex payloads can be used to dump system information and potentially execute arbitrary code (Exploit DB).

Mitigation and workarounds

Since this is a disputed vulnerability that requires trusted user access, the primary mitigation is to ensure proper access control and carefully manage who has access to template editing capabilities. Organizations should carefully vet and monitor users with administrative access to the CMS (NVD).
