The Windows Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2024-30085) is a security flaw discovered in the Windows operating system's Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver (cldflt). The vulnerability was disclosed in June 2024 and affects various versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. This security issue has been assigned a CVSS score of 7.8, indicating a high severity level (NVD, Security Online).

The vulnerability exists within the cldflt kernel driver, specifically in the HsmIBitmapNORMALOpen function's handling of reparse point bitmaps. The core issue stems from improper validation of user-supplied data lengths before copying them into a fixed-length heap-based buffer, classified as a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122). The vulnerability received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (ZDI, Security Online).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to escalate privileges to SYSTEM level, effectively gaining full control of the vulnerable system. With elevated privileges, attackers can install malicious software, modify sensitive system files, and access data restricted to the highest privilege levels (Security Online).

The vulnerability requires local access and was successfully demonstrated during the TyphoonPWN 2024 competition. A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit has been published by security researcher Alex Birnberg with SSD Secure Disclosure. The exploit leverages the length check bypass, flawed reparse point validation, and heap-based buffer overflow to achieve privilege escalation (Security Online).

Microsoft has addressed this vulnerability in the June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates. Users are strongly advised to apply the security patches immediately to protect their systems. The fix is particularly critical for Windows 11 23H2 installations (Security Online, Microsoft Advisory).
