Foxit PDF Reader vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Foxit PDF Reader contains a Use-After-Free vulnerability (CVE-2024-30367) that affects the handling of AcroForms. The vulnerability was discovered in January 2024 and publicly disclosed on March 28, 2024. This security flaw affects Foxit PDF Reader installations and requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file or visiting a malicious page, to be exploited (Zero Day Initiative).

The vulnerability stems from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object within the AcroForms handling functionality. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.0 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating local access, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction required for exploitation (Zero Day Initiative).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. This means an attacker could potentially gain the same level of access and privileges as the application running on the affected system (Zero Day Initiative).

The vulnerability requires user interaction for successful exploitation. An attacker would need to convince a user to either visit a malicious webpage or open a malicious file. The vulnerability was initially reported to Foxit on January 17, 2024, and was later publicly disclosed on March 28, 2024 (Zero Day Initiative).
