CVE-2024-3110
Homebrew vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the mintplex-labs/anything-llm application, affecting versions up to and including the latest before 1.0.0. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed in June 2024 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability arises from the application's failure to properly sanitize and validate user-supplied URLs before embedding them into the application UI as external links with custom icons. Specifically, the application does not prevent the inclusion of 'javascript:' protocol payloads in URLs. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.7 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability can be exploited by a user with manager role to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of another user's session. This can lead to the theft of admin authorization tokens, which can then be used to perform unauthorized actions, escalate privileges to admin, or directly take over the admin account (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

A patch has been released to address this vulnerability. The fix involves proper URL validation and sanitization before embedding external links in the application UI (GitHub Patch).
