CVE-2024-31839
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Cross Site Scripting vulnerability was discovered in tiagorlampert CHAOS v.5.0.1, a free and open-source Remote Administration Tool. The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to escalate privileges via the sendCommandHandler function in the handler.go component. The issue was disclosed on April 12, 2024 (NVD, CHAOS Github).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists within the sendCommandHandler function, where attacker-controlled response data is added to the DOM without proper sanitization. The vulnerability can be triggered when a RAT operator interacts with a spoofed agent. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 4.8 (MEDIUM) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD, Chebuya Blog).

Impact

A successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of the administrator and potentially trigger command injection vulnerabilities. This can lead to privilege escalation and potential remote code execution on the RAT server (Chebuya Blog).

Exploitability

The vulnerability can be exploited by extracting the JWT token from a RAT agent binary and using it to spoof agent callbacks. The attacker can then wait for RAT operator interaction to trigger the XSS payload. The attack can be chained with other vulnerabilities like command injection for greater impact (Chebuya Blog).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability was patched by the developer on May 29, 2024. Users should upgrade to CHAOS version 5.0.3 or later which contains the security fix (Chebuya Blog).
