WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The WP Shortcodes Plugin — Shortcodes Ultimate WordPress plugin before version 7.1.0 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The vulnerability was discovered on April 5, 2024, and affects users with contributor role and above. The issue stems from the plugin's failure to properly validate and escape shortcode attributes before outputting them back in pages or posts where the shortcode is embedded (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been assigned CVE-2024-3188 and received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.3 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L.
