WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The WP Shortcodes Plugin — Shortcodes Ultimate WordPress plugin before version 7.1.0 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The vulnerability was discovered on April 5, 2024, and affects users with contributor role and above. The issue stems from the plugin's failure to properly validate and escape shortcode attributes before outputting them back in pages or posts where the shortcode is embedded (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been assigned CVE-2024-3188 and received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.3 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L. The security flaw is classified as a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability under OWASP Top 10 category A7 and CWE-79 (WPScan).

The vulnerability allows authenticated users with contributor privileges or higher to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. When exploited, this could potentially lead to unauthorized script execution in the context of other users' browsers who view the affected pages (WPScan).

A proof of concept exists demonstrating that the vulnerability can be exploited by inserting malicious code into shortcode attributes. For example, using the shortcode [su_dailymotion url='123"onload="alert(XSS)"'] in a post will trigger the XSS payload when the post is viewed (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 7.1.0 of the Shortcodes Ultimate plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to protect against potential attacks (WPScan).
