PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-33998 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability discovered in Moodle's participants page. The vulnerability was identified on May 13, 2024, affecting Moodle versions 4.0 to 4.3.3, 4.2 to 4.2.6, 4.1 to 4.1.9, and earlier unsupported versions. The issue was reported by Aleksey Solovev from Positive Technologies (Moodle Forum).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient escaping of participants' names in the participants page table, which could lead to stored XSS attacks when interacting with certain features. The issue has been classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) (NVD).

The vulnerability is categorized as Minor severity according to Moodle's security assessment. When exploited, it could allow attackers to execute malicious scripts through stored XSS attacks via user names displayed on the participants page (Moodle Forum).

The vulnerability requires an attacker to be able to manipulate user names that are displayed in the participants page table. The issue has been confirmed in multiple Moodle versions, though no active exploits in the wild have been publicly reported (Moodle Forum).
