CVE-2024-36007
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2024-36007 affects the Linux kernel's mlxsw spectrumacltcam component. The vulnerability was discovered in May 2024 and involves a warning issue during rehash operations in the filter migration process (Kernel Git).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs during the rehash delayed work process that migrates filters between regions. When the work runs out of credits, it stores markers for the current chunk and entry in the per-work context to track migration progress. However, upon error, while the chunk marker is reset to NULL, the entry markers remain unchanged despite being relative to the chunk. This can lead to migration being resumed from an incorrect entry that doesn't belong to the chunk being migrated, resulting in a chunk being processed as if it were an entry (Kernel Git). The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 MEDIUM (Oracle Linux).

Impact

The vulnerability can trigger kernel warnings and potentially lead to system instability. While it doesn't result in KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer) splats due to the specific structure definitions, it generates warning messages in the system logs (Kernel Git).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been fixed by creating a helper function that resets all markers and implementing it in places where only the chunk marker was being reset. The fix also includes calling this helper when starting a new rehash operation and adding a warning to prevent future similar cases (Kernel Git).
