CVE-2024-37383
Linux Debian vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2024-37383 is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting Roundcube Webmail versions before 1.5.7 and 1.6.x before 1.6.7. The vulnerability allows attackers to execute malicious JavaScript code through SVG animate attributes. The issue was discovered by Valentin T. and Lutz Wolf of CrowdStrike and was publicly disclosed in June 2024 (Debian LTS, GitHub Release).

Technical details

The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.1 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The issue stems from improper processing of SVG elements within emails, where attackers can bypass Roundcube's security filters by exploiting malformed href attributes in SVG animate elements (SOCRadar).

Impact

When successfully exploited, the vulnerability allows attackers to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the victim's browser. This can lead to theft of sensitive information, including login credentials, and potential unauthorized access to email accounts (SOCRadar).

Exploitability

The vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild, particularly in phishing campaigns targeting government organizations in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. Attackers have used the vulnerability to inject fake login forms into Roundcube's interface to steal user credentials. The attacks were observed in June 2024, using hidden JavaScript payloads within seemingly empty emails (SOCRadar).

Mitigation and workarounds

Organizations are strongly advised to upgrade to Roundcube version 1.5.7 or 1.6.7 or later, which contain patches for this vulnerability. The fix has been implemented through security updates across various distributions, including Debian and Ubuntu. For Debian 10 (buster), the fix is available in version 1.3.17+dfsg.1-1~deb10u6 (Debian LTS, GitHub Release).
