WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Playlist for Youtube WordPress plugin through version 1.32 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The vulnerability was discovered on May 8, 2024, and is tracked as CVE-2024-3937. The issue affects the plugin's settings functionality, specifically impacting WordPress installations (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of certain plugin settings. This security flaw allows high-privilege users, such as administrators, to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, which is particularly relevant in multisite setups. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 3.5 (low severity) (WPScan).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows privileged users to inject malicious JavaScript code into the plugin's settings. The stored XSS payload can then be triggered when other users access the affected pages, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks (WPScan).

The vulnerability can be exploited by accessing the plugin's settings page at '/wp-admin/admin.php?page=playlists_yt_free' and injecting malicious payloads into fields such as the Playlist Name and Video size. A proof of concept demonstrates that using the payload '"><alert(1)' in these fields successfully triggers the XSS attack (WPScan).

Currently, there is no known fix available for this vulnerability. Users should monitor the plugin's updates and implement them when available. In the meantime, access to the plugin's settings should be strictly limited to trusted administrators (WPScan).
