CVE-2024-4014: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The hCaptcha for WordPress plugin is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via the plugin's cf7-hcaptcha shortcode in versions up to and including 4.0.0. This vulnerability was assigned CVE-2024-4014 and was discovered in April 2024 (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes in the cf7-hcaptcha shortcode. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access and above to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses an affected page (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level privileges to exploit. The attacker must have the ability to access and manipulate the cf7-hcaptcha shortcode attributes (NVD).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 4.0.1 of the hCaptcha for WordPress plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to protect against this security issue (WordPress Plugin).
