CVE-2024-4043
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The WP Ultimate Post Grid plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's 'wpupg-text' shortcode in versions up to and including 3.9.1. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes, allowing authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute when users access affected pages (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of user-supplied attributes in the 'wpupg-text' shortcode functionality. Authenticated users with contributor privileges or higher can exploit this by injecting malicious scripts through the shortcode attributes. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 6.4 (MEDIUM) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (Wordfence).

Impact

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute in users' browsers when they access pages containing the compromised shortcode. This can lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, or other malicious actions performed in the context of the visiting user's browser session (NVD).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user account with at least contributor-level privileges. The attacker must be able to create or edit content that includes the 'wpupg-text' shortcode. The attack complexity is considered low as it requires no special conditions or circumstances to exploit (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should update to a version newer than 3.9.1 of the WP Ultimate Post Grid plugin. The vulnerability has been patched in subsequent releases. If immediate updating is not possible, administrators should carefully review and restrict user permissions for content creation and editing (WordPress Plugin).
