CVE-2024-40793: 
macOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-40793 is a security vulnerability affecting Apple's operating systems, including iOS 16.7.9, iPadOS 16.7.9, macOS Ventura 13.6.8, macOS Monterey 12.7.6, iOS 17.6, iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, and macOS Sonoma 14.6. The vulnerability was discovered by security researcher Kirin (@Pwnrin) and disclosed on July 29, 2024 (Apple Security).

The vulnerability exists in the Shortcuts component of Apple's operating systems where an app may be able to access user-sensitive data. The issue was addressed by removing the vulnerable code. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 (MEDIUM) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N (NVD).

The vulnerability allows a malicious application to access user-sensitive data, potentially compromising user privacy and data confidentiality (Apple Security).

The vulnerability requires local access and low privileges to exploit. No public exploits have been reported in the wild at the time of disclosure (NVD).

Apple has addressed this vulnerability by removing the vulnerable code in the following updates: iOS 16.7.9 and iPadOS 16.7.9, macOS Ventura 13.6.8, macOS Monterey 12.7.6, iOS 17.6 and iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, and macOS Sonoma 14.6. Users are advised to update their devices to these versions (Apple Security).
