CVE-2024-41373
PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

ICEcoder version 8.1 contains a Path Traversal vulnerability in the lib/backup-versions-preview-loader.php file. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on July 26, 2024, and is tracked as CVE-2024-41373. The issue affects the backup versions preview functionality of the ICEcoder web-based code editor (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the backup-versions-preview-loader.php file where user input from $GET['file'] parameter is insufficiently sanitized. While the input goes through the xssClean function, this function does not properly filter directory traversal characters like '/', '.' and '', allowing path traversal attacks. The CVSS v3.1 base score for this vulnerability is 6.3 MEDIUM (Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L) ([Github POC](https://github.com/xjzzzxx/vulFound/blob/main/icecoder/icecoder8.1PT.md)).

Impact

The path traversal vulnerability allows authenticated attackers to read arbitrary files on the system through the backup versions preview functionality. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files outside the intended directory structure (Github POC).
