CVE-2024-4356: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The List categories plugin for WordPress contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2024-4356) in all versions up to and including 0.4. The vulnerability exists in the plugin's 'categories' shortcode due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes (NVD).

The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. This indicates that the vulnerability requires network access and low privileges to exploit, but has no user interaction requirement (Wordfence).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level privileges to exploit. The attacker must have the ability to create or edit content using the plugin's 'categories' shortcode (NVD).

Users of the List categories plugin should update to a version newer than 0.4 if available, or consider removing the plugin until a patch is released (WordPress Plugin).
