An issue was discovered in GitLab Enterprise Edition (EE) affecting all versions from 16.5 prior to 17.7.7, 17.8 prior to 17.8.5, and 17.9 prior to 17.9.2 which allowed a user with a custom permission to approve pending membership requests beyond the maximum number of allowed users (GitLab Release, NVD).

Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability allows users with custom Admin group member permissions to bypass user caps and approve user invitations despite reaching the maximum number of allowed users (Security Online).

Mitigation and workarounds

GitLab has addressed this vulnerability in versions 17.7.7, 17.8.5, and 17.9.2. Users are strongly recommended to upgrade to these patched versions immediately. GitLab.com is already running the patched version, and GitLab Dedicated customers will be notified once their instance has been patched (GitLab Release).
