WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Element Pack Elementor Addons plugin for WordPress (versions up to and including 5.10.2) contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in the 'Open Map Widget' marker_content parameter. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on November 5, 2024, affecting the plugin's functionality related to header, footer, template library, dynamic grid, carousel, and remote arrows components (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'Open Map Widget' marker_content parameter. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) (NVD, Patchstack).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, session hijacking, or other malicious activities (NVD).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 5.10.3 of the Element Pack Elementor Addons plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to remediate the security risk (Patchstack).
