TabberNeue is a MediaWiki extension that allows wikis to create tabs. A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in versions prior to 2.7.2, specifically affecting TabberTransclude.php. The vulnerability was identified on January 6, 2025, and tracked as CVE-2025-21612 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in TabberTransclude.php where the user-supplied page name is not properly escaped when outputting. This vulnerability was introduced in commit d8c3db4e5935476e496d979fb01f775d3d3282e6 and allows an XSS payload to be injected through the page name parameter (GitHub Advisory).

Impact

The vulnerability allows any user who can edit pages or otherwise render wikitext to perform cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks against other users of the wiki (GitHub Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.7.2 with commit f229cab099c69006e25d4bad3579954e481dc566, which properly escapes the page name using Sanitizer::escapeHtmlAllowEntities() (GitHub Fix). Users are advised to upgrade to version 2.7.2 or later.
