CVE-2025-36407: 
IBM Db2 vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2025-36407 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in IBM Db2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (including Db2 Connect Server) caused by improper neutralization of special elements in data query logic. It affects versions 11.5.0 through 11.5.9 and 12.1.0 through 12.1.3 across Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms. The vulnerability was published on January 30, 2026. It carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 (Medium) per NVD, though ENISA rates it 6.5 (Medium) using a network attack vector (IBM Advisory, Red Hat CVE).

The root cause is classified as CWE-1284 (Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input), where IBM Db2 fails to properly neutralize special elements within data query logic, specifically in the handling of ALTER TABLE operations. A local, low-privileged user can submit a specially crafted query using ALTER TABLE operations that triggers the flaw, causing the database engine to crash. No user interaction is required for exploitation. No public proof-of-concept or detailed technical write-up has been identified at this time (IBM Advisory, Red Hat CVE).

Successful exploitation results in a denial of service, crashing the affected Db2 instance and disrupting database availability and service continuity. There is no impact on confidentiality or data integrity — the vulnerability is limited to availability.
