NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2025-48532 is a confused deputy (CWE-441) vulnerability in Android's MediaProvider.java that allows a local attacker to bypass the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission and escalate privileges. The flaw resides in the markMediaAsFavorite function and affects Android 16.0. It was disclosed as part of Google's September 2025 Android Security Bulletin (published September 4, 2025). It carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.3 (High) (Android Bulletin).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-441 (Unintended Proxy or Intermediary / Confused Deputy), located in the markMediaAsFavorite method of MediaProvider.java. A low-privileged application can abuse the MediaProvider component — which holds elevated permissions — as an unintended proxy to perform write operations on external storage without possessing the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission itself. Exploitation requires user interaction but no additional execution privileges beyond a low-privilege local context (Android Bulletin, EUVD).

Successful exploitation enables local privilege escalation, allowing an attacker to bypass the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission restriction and perform unauthorized write operations on external storage. The CVSS assessment rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts all as High, meaning an attacker could potentially access, modify, or corrupt media files and other data accessible via the MediaProvider (Android Bulletin).

Google has released a patch as part of the Android September 2025 Security Bulletin (patch level 2025-09-01). Users and administrators should apply the latest Android security update immediately to affected Android 16.0 devices. Samsung has also incorporated this fix in its September 2025 security update for Galaxy devices.
