CVE-2025-7649
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The Surbma | Recent Comments Shortcode plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's 'recent' shortcode in versions up to 2.0. This vulnerability was discovered and reported in 2025 (Tenable).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the plugin's shortcode functionality. When processing the 'recent-comments' shortcode, the plugin fails to properly sanitize user input before displaying it on the page (WordPress Plugin).

Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or above to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses an affected page, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks (Tenable).
