CVE-2026-23077:
Linux Debian vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-23077 is a use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel's virtual memory area (VMA) management code, specifically triggered during mremap() operations when merging a faulted VMA adjacent to an unfaulted VMA. The flaw was introduced by commit 879bca0a2c4f ("mm/vma: fix incorrectly disallowed anonymous VMA merges"), which enabled previously unavailable VMA merge scenarios but failed to correctly handle anon_vma state in certain edge cases. Affected kernel versions include 6.16 through 6.18.7 and 6.19-rc1 through 6.19-rc5. It carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High) (Feedly).

Technical details

The root cause is a use-after-free condition (CWE-416) in the Linux kernel's mm/vma subsystem. When mremap() is called on a faulted VMA that is adjacent to an unfaulted VMA, the kernel incorrectly handles the anon_vma reference during the merge operation across three scenarios: (1) the previous VMA is unfaulted, (2) the next VMA is unfaulted, or (3) both adjacent VMAs are unfaulted. This results in a dangling anon_vma pointer being accessed after it has been freed. The vulnerability is exploitable locally with low privileges and requires no user interaction, making it relatively straightforward to trigger on affected systems (Feedly, Kernel Patch 1, Kernel Patch 2).

Impact

Successful exploitation can result in high-severity impacts across all three security dimensions: unauthorized memory read (confidentiality), memory corruption (integrity), and system instability or crash (availability). A local attacker with low privileges could leverage the UAF condition to corrupt kernel memory structures, potentially escalating privileges or causing a denial of service. Systems running Linux kernel versions 6.16–6.18.7 and 6.19-rc1 through 6.19-rc5 are at risk whenever mremap() operations encounter the vulnerable VMA merge scenarios (Feedly).

Exploitability

As of the time of reporting, there is no public proof-of-concept exploit and no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation. The EPSS score is approximately 0.018% (0.000180), indicating a low probability of exploitation in the near term. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Despite the absence of a public exploit, the low attack complexity and low privilege requirement make it a credible local privilege escalation candidate (Feedly).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been patched in Linux kernel version 6.18.8 and later. Two upstream fix commits are available: 61f67c2 and a4d9dbf. Administrators should upgrade affected systems running kernel versions 6.16–6.18.7 or any 6.19-rc release to 6.18.8 or a later stable release as soon as possible. As a short-term measure, restricting local user access on sensitive systems reduces the attack surface, since exploitation requires local low-privilege access (Feedly, Kernel Patch 1, Kernel Patch 2).

Community reactions

The vulnerability was noted by VulDB and tracked on Mastodon's infosec.exchange community shortly after disclosure. The Yocto Project security mailing list also flagged the issue for embedded Linux maintainers. No major vendor advisories or prominent researcher commentary beyond standard tracking have been observed (Feedly).
