CVE-2026-23470:
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-23470 is a deadlock vulnerability in the Linux kernel's drm/imagination (PowerVR GPU) driver affecting the soft reset sequence. The flaw was published on April 3, 2026, and affects Linux kernel versions 6.8 through 6.12.78 (exclusive), 6.13 through 6.18.20 (exclusive), and 6.19 through 6.19.10 (exclusive), as well as release candidates 7.0-rc1 through 7.0-rc4. It carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 (Medium) (GitHub Advisory, Feedly).

Technical details

The root cause is improper locking (CWE-667): the soft reset sequence in the drm/imagination driver is executed from within a threaded IRQ handler, but incorrectly calls disable_irq(), which internally blocks until all IRQ handlers — including the calling handler itself — have completed. This creates a self-deadlock where the threaded IRQ handler waits indefinitely for itself to finish. The fix replaces disable_irq() with disable_irq_nosync(), which disables the IRQ without waiting for any in-progress handler to complete, breaking the deadlock condition (GitHub Advisory, Feedly).

Impact

Successful exploitation causes a system hang or complete unresponsiveness when a soft reset is triggered in the DRM imagination (PowerVR) graphics subsystem. The impact is limited to availability — there is no confidentiality or integrity impact. A local attacker with low privileges could induce graphics subsystem errors to trigger the vulnerable code path, resulting in a denial-of-service condition that prevents recovery from GPU errors and may require a hard reboot (GitHub Advisory, Feedly).

Exploitability

There is no known public proof-of-concept exploit and no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation as of the time of writing (Feedly). The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. The EPSS score is approximately 0.018% (2nd percentile), indicating a very low probability of exploitation in the near term (GitHub Advisory). Exploitation requires local access with low privileges and the ability to trigger a soft reset of the PowerVR GPU driver.

Mitigation and workarounds

Update the Linux kernel to one of the patched versions: 6.12.78, 6.18.20, 6.19.10, or 7.0-rc5. The fix is delivered via four upstream commits: f99e8b813ae5, 9497b1f30943, 6f39b48a2d3b, and a55c2a5c8d68. SUSE has released security updates addressing this CVE (SUSE Advisory). If immediate patching is not feasible, limit local user access on systems with PowerVR (Imagination Technologies) GPUs and monitor for graphics subsystem errors that could trigger the vulnerable soft reset path (Feedly).

Community reactions

SUSE issued security update announcements (SUSE-SU-2026:2217-1 and SUSE-SU-2026:2238-1) addressing this CVE as part of broader kernel update batches (SUSE Advisory). The Yocto Project security mailing list also tracked this vulnerability across multiple messages. No notable independent researcher commentary or significant social media discussion has been identified for this vulnerability.
