CVE-2026-27609:
JavaScript vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-27609 is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Parse Dashboard, a standalone management interface for Parse Server applications. The vulnerability affects the AI Agent API endpoint (POST /apps/:appId/agent), which lacks CSRF protection in versions 7.3.0-alpha.42 through 9.0.0-alpha.7. It was published on February 23, 2026 by researcher mtrezza via GitHub Advisory GHSA-3534-xp88-25rc, and received an NVD entry on February 25, 2026. The vulnerability carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (Medium) and a CVSS v4.0 base score of 8.3 (High) (GitHub Advisory).

Technical details

The root cause is CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery): the POST /apps/:appId/agent endpoint in Parse Dashboard does not validate whether incoming requests originate from the legitimate dashboard interface, relying solely on the victim's authenticated session cookie. An attacker can craft a malicious HTML page containing a form or JavaScript that automatically submits a POST request to the agent endpoint; when an authenticated dashboard user visits the attacker-controlled page, the browser automatically includes the session cookie, causing the server to process the forged request as legitimate. No special privileges are required by the attacker — only passive user interaction (the victim visiting the malicious page) is needed. The fix in version 9.0.0-alpha.8 adds CSRF middleware to the agent endpoint and embeds a CSRF token in the dashboard page to validate request origin (GitHub Advisory, Parse Dashboard Release).

Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to perform unauthorized actions on Parse Server applications managed through the dashboard, using the privileges of the authenticated victim. The primary impact is to integrity — both on the vulnerable system and subsequent systems — as the attacker can submit arbitrary AI Agent API requests on behalf of the victim without their knowledge or consent. Confidentiality and availability are not directly impacted by this vulnerability. The scope of damage depends on what actions the AI Agent endpoint permits, which could include data manipulation or configuration changes within managed Parse Server apps (GitHub Advisory).

Exploitability

There is no public proof-of-concept exploit code and no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation at this time (Feedly). The EPSS score is approximately 0.007% (1st percentile), indicating a very low probability of exploitation in the near term. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. No threat actor attribution has been reported. Exploitation requires social engineering — tricking an authenticated Parse Dashboard user into visiting a malicious page — which limits opportunistic exploitation but does not eliminate targeted attack risk.

Exploitation steps

  1. Reconnaissance: Identify targets using Parse Dashboard versions 7.3.0-alpha.42 through 9.0.0-alpha.7 with the agent configuration block enabled. This can be done by reviewing publicly accessible Parse Dashboard instances or targeting known users of the Parse platform.
  2. Craft malicious page: Create an HTML page containing a hidden form or JavaScript fetch()/XMLHttpRequest that automatically submits a POST request to https://<target-dashboard>/apps/<appId>/agent with a crafted payload upon page load.
  3. Deliver the malicious link: Send the link to the malicious page to an authenticated Parse Dashboard user via phishing email, social media, or other social engineering channels.
  4. Trigger the CSRF: When the authenticated victim visits the attacker's page, their browser automatically includes the session cookie in the cross-origin POST request to the agent endpoint, causing the server to process the forged request as if it were legitimate.
  5. Achieve unauthorized action: The agent endpoint executes the attacker-specified action using the victim's session privileges, potentially modifying data or configurations within the managed Parse Server applications (GitHub Advisory).

Indicators of compromise

  • Logs: Unexpected or anomalous POST requests to /apps/<appId>/agent in Parse Dashboard access logs, particularly from unusual referrer origins or with no referrer header.
  • Network: HTTP POST requests to the agent endpoint originating from external or unexpected domains (cross-origin requests without a matching CSRF token in patched versions).
  • Behavioral: Dashboard activity logs showing AI Agent interactions that the authenticated user did not initiate, especially at unusual times or with unfamiliar payloads.

Mitigation and workarounds

The primary remediation is to upgrade Parse Dashboard to version 9.0.0-alpha.8 or later, which adds CSRF middleware to the agent endpoint and embeds a CSRF token in the dashboard page (Parse Dashboard Release). As an immediate workaround for those unable to upgrade, remove the agent configuration block from the dashboard configuration file — dashboards without an agent config are not affected by this vulnerability (GitHub Advisory). Organizations should also ensure Parse Dashboard is not exposed to untrusted networks and that users are trained to avoid clicking unsolicited links while authenticated.
