CVE-2026-4167:
Linux Alpine vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-4167 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the Belkin F9K1122 wireless router firmware version 1.00.33. The flaw exists in the formReboot function of the /goform/formReboot endpoint, where the webpage POST parameter is copied into a fixed-size stack buffer without length validation. It was disclosed on March 15–16, 2026, with a public PoC published simultaneously. The vulnerability carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 (High) and a CVSS v4.0 base score of 7.4 (High) (VulDB, ENISA EUVD).

Technical details

The root cause is improper restriction of operations within the bounds of a memory buffer (CWE-119 / CWE-121). In the formReboot function, the user-supplied webpage POST parameter is read and the derived variable p_ok_msg is passed directly to strcpy() without any length check, allowing it to overflow the stack-based buffer ok_msg. The vulnerability was discovered and confirmed using FirmAE firmware emulation of the Belkin F9K1122 firmware. A public PoC HTTP request sending approximately 2,630 bytes to POST /goform/formReboot with an oversized webpage parameter is available on GitHub (GitHub PoC). Exploitation requires low-privilege authentication (PR:L) but no user interaction.

Impact

Successful exploitation can result in a complete compromise of the affected Belkin F9K1122 device, including arbitrary code execution or denial of service (device crash/reboot loop). All three security pillars are affected: confidentiality (unauthorized access to device configuration and network traffic), integrity (modification of router settings, DNS hijacking, traffic interception), and availability (device crash or persistent denial of service). Because the device is a network router, compromise could enable an attacker to pivot into the connected local network, intercept or redirect traffic, and affect all devices behind the router (GitHub PoC, ENISA EUVD).

Exploitability

A public proof-of-concept HTTP request is available on GitHub, disclosed at the time of CVE publication in March 2026 (GitHub PoC). The CVSS v4.0 exploit maturity is rated "Proof of Concept" (E:P). There is no confirmed evidence of active in-the-wild exploitation or threat actor attribution at this time. The EPSS score is approximately 0.043% (0.000430), indicating a currently low probability of exploitation in the near term. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Notably, Belkin did not respond to the researcher's disclosure, leaving the vulnerability unpatched (VulDB, ENISA EUVD).

Exploitation steps

  1. Reconnaissance: Identify Belkin F9K1122 routers on the target network using network scanning tools (e.g., Nmap with service/version detection) or by browsing to the device's default gateway IP. Confirm firmware version 1.00.33 via the router's web management interface.
  2. Authenticate: Obtain low-privilege credentials to the router's web interface (default credentials are commonly admin/password or similar for Belkin devices).
  3. Craft the malicious request: Construct an HTTP POST request targeting /goform/formReboot with an oversized webpage parameter (e.g., 2,630+ bytes of repeated characters) to overflow the ok_msg stack buffer:
POST /goform/formReboot HTTP/1.1
Host: <router-ip>
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
Content-Length: 2630

webpage=aaaa...[2630+ bytes]...
  1. Trigger the overflow: Send the crafted request using a tool such as curl, Burp Suite, or a custom Python script. The strcpy() call in formReboot copies the oversized input into the fixed stack buffer without bounds checking.
  2. Achieve impact: Depending on the payload, the result is either a device crash (denial of service) or, with a crafted ROP/shellcode payload tailored to the device's MIPS architecture, arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the web server process (GitHub PoC).

Indicators of compromise

  • Network: Unexpected HTTP POST requests to /goform/formReboot with unusually large Content-Length values (>500 bytes) or webpage parameter values containing long repetitive strings; outbound connections from the router to unknown external IPs after such requests.
  • Logs: Router web server access logs showing POST requests to /goform/formReboot with oversized body content; repeated crash/reboot events logged in the router's system log.
  • Availability: Unexpected router reboots or loss of connectivity immediately following HTTP POST activity to the management interface.
  • Configuration: Unexplained changes to DNS settings, firewall rules, or port forwarding rules on the router following suspicious POST activity.

Mitigation and workarounds

No vendor patch is available; Belkin did not respond to the researcher's disclosure and no fixed firmware version has been released (ENISA EUVD). Recommended mitigations include: (1) Restrict management interface access — block access to the router's web management interface from untrusted networks using firewall rules or ACLs; (2) Network segmentation — isolate the affected device to a dedicated VLAN or management network accessible only to trusted administrators; (3) Disable remote management — ensure remote/WAN-side management is disabled if not required; (4) Change default credentials — use strong, unique credentials to reduce the risk of the required low-privilege authentication being bypassed; (5) Consider device replacement — evaluate replacing the F9K1122 with a supported device that receives security updates.

Community reactions

The vulnerability was noted by automated threat intelligence aggregators including VulDB, ENISA EUVD, and CVEFeed shortly after disclosure in March 2026. Social media activity was limited to automated CVE notification accounts on Mastodon (via @vuldb and @thehackerwire) and Bluesky. No significant vendor statement, named researcher commentary, or major media coverage has been identified beyond the original researcher disclosure by Li Tengzheng on GitHub (VulDB, GitHub PoC).
