Overview

CVE-2026-84639 is an uninitialized memory vulnerability in Mozilla Thunderbird's MIME parsing component. Triggering an error condition in certain MIME bodies causes uninitialized memory to be used, potentially exposing sensitive memory contents. Technical details

The root cause is improper handling of error conditions during MIME body parsing, classified as use of uninitialized memory (CWE-908). When Thunderbird's MIME parser encounters a malformed or specially crafted MIME body that triggers an error path, it proceeds to use memory that has not been properly initialized, potentially leaking its contents. An attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted email with a malformed MIME body to a Thunderbird user; no authentication or user interaction beyond receiving/opening the email is required. Mozilla notes that direct exploitation via email is mitigated in Thunderbird because scripting is disabled when reading mail, but the flaw may pose greater risk in browser or browser-like contexts (MFSA2026-86, MFSA2026-87).

Impact

Successful exploitation results in memory disclosure, where uninitialized heap or stack memory contents may be exposed to an attacker. This could leak sensitive data such as cryptographic material, credentials, or other in-memory secrets processed by Thunderbird. While the primary impact is confidentiality, the exposure of memory layout information could also facilitate further exploitation of other vulnerabilities (e.g., bypassing ASLR).
