CVE-2026-95502:
Grafana vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-95502 is a Denial of Service vulnerability in Grafana's Git Sync (provisioning) feature caused by uncontrolled resource consumption. A malicious or compromised Git server configured for use with Grafana's Git Sync can exhaust Grafana's memory by returning oversized or highly compressed responses. Affected products include Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise versions 13.0.0–13.0.10, 13.1.0–13.1.7, and 13.2.0–13.2.3, as well as Grafana's Nanogit library versions prior to 1.7.0. The vulnerability was disclosed on October 13, 2026, and carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.3 (Medium) (Github Advisory, Red Hat Bugzilla).

Technical details

The root cause is classified under CWE-409 (Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data / Data Amplification) and CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). When Grafana's Git Sync feature fetches content from a configured Git server, it does not enforce limits on response size or decompressed data volume, allowing a server to return bomb-style compressed payloads or oversized responses that expand to consume all available memory. Exploitation requires a precondition: an administrator must have already configured Git Sync to use an attacker-controlled Git server, meaning the attack surface is limited to environments where this provisioning feature is enabled and pointed at an untrusted or compromised endpoint (Github Advisory, Red Hat Bugzilla).

Impact

Successful exploitation causes Grafana to consume excessive memory, leading to service unavailability or a crash — a pure availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity consequences. The affected scope is limited to the Grafana instance itself; there is no evidence of lateral movement potential or data exposure risk. Organizations relying on Grafana for observability and monitoring dashboards could experience significant operational disruption if the service becomes unresponsive (Github Advisory, Red Hat Bugzilla).

Exploitability

There is no public proof-of-concept exploit and no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation as of the disclosure date (Github Advisory). The EPSS score is 0.0, reflecting very low probability of near-term exploitation. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Exploitation is further constrained by the requirement that an administrator must have configured Git Sync with an attacker-controlled server, significantly limiting the realistic attack surface.

Exploitation steps

  1. Precondition — Control a Git server: The attacker must operate or compromise a Git server that a Grafana administrator has configured as the Git Sync provisioning source.
  2. Craft malicious Git responses: Prepare oversized repository objects or highly compressed data (e.g., zip bomb-style packfiles) that expand dramatically upon decompression by Grafana's Nanogit library.
  3. Trigger Git Sync: Wait for or induce Grafana to perform a Git Sync operation (e.g., on a scheduled interval or configuration reload), causing Grafana to fetch data from the attacker-controlled server.
  4. Memory exhaustion: The malicious server returns the oversized or compressed payload; Grafana's Nanogit library processes it without enforcing size limits, causing unbounded memory allocation and eventual service crash or OOM kill (Github Advisory, Red Hat Bugzilla).

Indicators of compromise

  • Logs: Grafana application logs showing repeated or failed Git Sync operations against an unexpected or external Git server URL; out-of-memory (OOM) errors or crash reports in Grafana server logs.
  • Process/System: Sudden spike in Grafana process memory consumption visible in system monitoring tools (e.g., top, htop, Prometheus metrics); OOM killer events in /var/log/syslog or dmesg referencing the Grafana process.
  • Network: Outbound connections from the Grafana server to an unfamiliar or external Git server IP/hostname during provisioning sync intervals; unusually large data transfers from the Git server to Grafana.

Mitigation and workarounds

Grafana has released patched versions addressing this vulnerability: update Grafana OSS or Grafana Enterprise to version 13.0.11, 13.1.8, or 13.2.4 (or later), and update the Nanogit library to version 1.7.0 or later. As an immediate workaround, administrators should disable Git Sync provisioning if it is not required, or ensure that only fully trusted, internally controlled Git servers are configured as Git Sync sources. Restricting network access so Grafana can only reach approved Git server endpoints also reduces exposure (Github Advisory, Red Hat Bugzilla).

Community reactions

Red Hat tracked the vulnerability via their Bugzilla system and assigned it medium severity, with the issue reported and modified on October 13, 2026 (Red Hat Bugzilla). The GitHub Advisory Database published the advisory the same day, classifying it as Moderate severity (Github Advisory). No notable independent researcher commentary or significant social media discussion has been identified beyond standard vulnerability tracking aggregators.
