CVE-2020-10963
PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The vulnerability (CVE-2020-10963) affects FrozenNode's Laravel-Administrator package, an administrative interface builder for Laravel. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed in March 2020, allowing unrestricted file upload in the Laravel-Administrator package (XaviBel Blog).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the file upload functionality of Laravel-Administrator's custom modules. The protection mechanism can be bypassed by uploading an allowed file, intercepting the request, changing the file extension to .php, adding a GIF image header to bypass content filters, and including malicious PHP code (XaviBel Blog).

Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to achieve remote code execution on the server by uploading malicious PHP files. Once exploited, attackers can execute arbitrary code with the web server's privileges (XaviBel Blog).

Mitigation and workarounds

As the project is officially abandoned and its fork (Laravel-Admin) has stopped development since Laravel 5.8, users are recommended to migrate to other supported platforms to ensure security (XaviBel Blog).
