Java vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2020-2188 is a security vulnerability discovered in Jenkins Amazon EC2 Plugin versions 1.50.1 and earlier, disclosed on May 6, 2020. The vulnerability stems from a missing permission check in form-related methods that allowed users with Overall/Read access to enumerate credentials IDs stored in Jenkins (Jenkins Advisory, OSS Security).

The vulnerability is classified with a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 4.3 (MEDIUM) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N. The issue relates to incorrect authorization (CWE-863) where the plugin's functionality for listing applicable credentials IDs did not properly validate user permissions (NVD).

The vulnerability allows any user with Overall/Read permission to obtain a list of valid credentials IDs stored in Jenkins. These credential IDs could potentially be used as part of a broader attack to capture the actual credentials if combined with another vulnerability (Jenkins Advisory).

The vulnerability was fixed in Amazon EC2 Plugin version 1.50.2. The updated version now requires Overall/Administer permission to enumerate credentials IDs. Organizations should upgrade to this version or later to address the vulnerability (Jenkins Advisory).
