Telegram Desktop through version 2.4.3 contained a security vulnerability (CVE-2020-25824) related to passcode verification during data export. The vulnerability was discovered in September 2020 and disclosed in October 2020. The issue affects the Export Telegram Data wizard functionality in Telegram Desktop versions 2.3.1 and 2.4.3 and earlier (NVD, Gentoo).
The vulnerability stems from a lack of passcode verification when using the Export key within the Export Telegram Data wizard. When a user opens the Export Wizard and leaves the system unattended, the application fails to require passcode re-entry upon pushing the Export button, even if local passcode protection is enabled (NVD).
The vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to all chat conversations and media files. An attacker with physical access to an unattended system could export all Telegram data without needing to know or enter the local passcode, resulting in a complete compromise of user privacy (NVD).
The vulnerability was fixed in Telegram Desktop version 2.4.4. Users should upgrade to version 2.4.4 or later to address this security issue. Until the update can be applied, users should not leave their systems unattended with the Export Telegram Data wizard open (Gentoo).
