CVE-2020-27192
Homebrew vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

BinaryNights ForkLift 3.4 contained a security vulnerability where the application was compiled with the com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation flag enabled, which allowed local attackers to inject code into ForkLift and execute malicious code with escalated privileges through ForkLift's helper tool. The vulnerability was discovered in 2020 and was assigned identifier CVE-2020-27192 (NVD, Insinuator).

Technical details

The vulnerability stemmed from the application being compiled with the com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation entitlement flag enabled. This configuration allowed attackers to bypass system hardening features that normally prevent dylib loading. The vulnerability had a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code with root privileges through ForkLift's helper tool. This meant an attacker could gain complete system access and perform any action with elevated system privileges (NVD, Insinuator).

Exploitability

The vulnerability required local access to exploit. An attacker could leverage the disabled library validation to inject malicious code into ForkLift, which would then execute with elevated privileges through the helper tool. Proof-of-concept exploit code was publicly released demonstrating the vulnerability (Insinuator).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability was fixed in subsequent versions of ForkLift by removing the com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation entitlement flag. The vendor recommended upgrading to a patched version. The researcher recommended that applications should not use the com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation entitlement and should ensure entitlements are securely set (Insinuator).
