CVE-2020-27755: 
ImageMagick vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2020-27755 is a security vulnerability discovered in ImageMagick, affecting the image processing software's memory handling functionality. The vulnerability was identified in the SetImageExtent() function of MagickCore/image.c, where an incorrect image depth size could lead to memory leaks. This issue was discovered by Suhwan Song from Seoul National University and was later patched in ImageMagick version 7.0.9-0 (Red Hat Bugzilla).

The vulnerability stems from improper validation of image depth size in the SetImageExtent() function. When processing an image with invalid depth size, the code failed to reset the size before throwing an exception, resulting in memory leaks. The issue specifically occurred in the ResizeMagickMemory function within ImageMagick/MagickCore/memory.c (GitHub Issue). A patch was implemented to reset the depth to a proper size before throwing an exception (OpenSUSE Patch).

The vulnerability could be exploited if a user or automated system was tricked into processing a specially crafted image file, potentially leading to denial of service or affecting system reliability through memory leaks (Ubuntu Security).

The vulnerability can be triggered by processing a maliciously crafted input file through ImageMagick. While the flaw requires user interaction to process a malformed image, it could affect application reliability and potentially lead to denial of service conditions (Red Hat Bugzilla).

The vulnerability has been patched in ImageMagick version 7.0.9-0. Various Linux distributions have released security updates to address this issue. Ubuntu users can update their systems through standard system updates, with fixes available for Ubuntu 20.10, 20.04 LTS, and 18.04 ESM versions (Ubuntu Security).
