NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-0509 is a security vulnerability discovered in the Media Framework component of Android operating system affecting Android versions 8.1, 9, 10, and 11. The vulnerability was disclosed in June 2021 as part of Android's security bulletin. It is an Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability that exists in various functions of CryptoPlugin.cpp due to a race condition (Android Security Bulletin).

The vulnerability is a race condition issue in the CryptoPlugin.cpp component that could lead to a use-after-free condition. The vulnerability has been classified as an Elevation of Privilege issue that requires no additional execution privileges for exploitation (CVE Mitre).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability could allow a local malicious application to bypass user interaction requirements to gain access to additional permissions. The vulnerability could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed (Threatpost).

The vulnerability requires local access and no user interaction is needed for exploitation. It cannot be exploited remotely, making it a local security threat (CVE Mitre).

Google addressed this vulnerability in the Android Security Bulletin for June 2021. Users should update their Android devices to a security patch level of 2021-06-01 or later to receive the fix (Android Security Bulletin).
