Java vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-27807 is a security vulnerability discovered in Apache PDFBox versions 2.0.22 and prior 2.0.x versions. The vulnerability was disclosed on March 19, 2021, and involves a carefully crafted PDF file that can trigger an infinite loop while loading the file. The vulnerability was reported by Fabian Meumertzheim (OSS Security).

The vulnerability exists in the PDF file loading mechanism of Apache PDFBox, where a specially crafted PDF file can cause the application to enter an infinite loop during the loading process. This type of vulnerability could potentially lead to a denial of service condition. The issue affects all Apache PDFBox 2.0.x versions up to and including version 2.0.22 (CVE Mitre).

When exploited, this vulnerability can cause the application to enter an infinite loop, effectively creating a denial of service condition that could prevent the processing of legitimate PDF files and consume system resources (NVD).

The vulnerability can be triggered by processing a specially crafted PDF file. No authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability if an attacker can convince a user to process a malicious PDF file or if the vulnerable system automatically processes PDF files.

The vulnerability has been fixed in Apache PDFBox version 2.0.23. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later to address the security issue. Various distributions have also released patches, including Fedora which has updated to version 2.0.23-1 (Fedora Update).
