CVE-2021-28822
TIBCO Enterprise Message Service vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The vulnerability (CVE-2021-28822) affects multiple components of TIBCO Software Inc.'s Enterprise Message Service products, including the Enterprise Message Service Server (tibemsd), Enterprise Message Service Central Administration (tibemsca), Enterprise Message Service JSON configuration generator (tibemsconf2json), and Enterprise Message Service C API. The vulnerability was discovered in versions 8.5.1 and below of TIBCO Enterprise Message Service, its Community Edition, and Developer Edition. This security issue allows a low-privileged attacker with local access on Windows systems to insert and execute malicious software with elevated privileges (NIST NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from the affected components searching for run-time artifacts outside of the installation hierarchy. This design flaw allows for potential privilege escalation through malicious software execution. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) by NIST with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, while TIBCO assessed it with a score of 8.8 (HIGH) and vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H (NIST NVD).

Impact

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to execute malicious software with elevated privileges, potentially compromising the system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The elevated privileges gained through exploitation could give attackers significant control over the affected system (NIST NVD).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires local access to the Windows operating system and low privileges to exploit. No user interaction is needed for exploitation, making it relatively straightforward for an attacker who has already gained local access to the system (NIST NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

Organizations should upgrade affected TIBCO Enterprise Message Service products to versions newer than 8.5.1. This applies to all editions including the Community and Developer editions (NIST NVD).
