CVE-2022-49214
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2022-49214 affects the Linux kernel's PowerPC architecture implementation. The vulnerability was introduced by commit 46ddcb3950a2 which incorrectly used DSISR (Data Storage Interrupt Status Register) values for SLB (Segment Lookaside Buffer) faults. This caused incorrect reporting of read operations as write operations during data access faults on PowerPC 64s systems (Kernel Git).

Technical details

The issue occurs because SLB faults (Data Segment Interrupts) don't set DSISR to a useful value. According to the PowerPC ISA specifications from v2.03 through v3.1, the Data Segment Interrupt sets DSISR "to an undefined value". The dataaccessslb block in exceptions-64s.S doesn't set IDSISR=1, meaning it doesn't load DSISR into pt_regs. This results in using stale values from previous page faults when determining if a fault is a read or write operation (Kernel Git).

Impact

The vulnerability causes incorrect reporting of memory access types during kernel fault handling on PowerPC 64s systems. Specifically, read operations can be incorrectly reported as write operations in kernel error messages, which could lead to incorrect debugging information and potentially mask the true nature of memory access issues (Kernel Git).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue was fixed by reworking the printing logic to separate the SLB fault case and only print read/write information in cases where it can be accurately determined. The fix was implemented in the Linux kernel through commit d4679ac8ea2e5078704aa1c026db36580cc1bf9a (Kernel Git).
