CVE-2023-29464: 
FactoryTalk Linx (RSLinx Enterprise) vulnerability analysis and mitigation

FactoryTalk Linx, in the Rockwell Automation PanelView Plus, contains a critical vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated threat actor to read data from memory via crafted malicious packets. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2023-29464, was discovered by Yuval Gordon from CPS Research, Microsoft Threat Intelligence Community. The issue affects FactoryTalk Linx versions 6.20 and prior (CISA Advisory, NVD).

The vulnerability stems from improper input validation (CWE-20) where sending a size larger than the buffer size results in leakage of data from memory. The vulnerability has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.2 (High) with the vector string AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H, indicating network accessibility, low attack complexity, and no required privileges or user interaction (NVD, Hacker News).

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to two primary impacts: information disclosure through memory data leakage, and a denial-of-service condition. If the size of the malicious packet is large enough, it causes communications over the common industrial protocol to become unresponsive to any type of packet, resulting in a denial-of-service to FactoryTalk Linx (CISA Advisory).

Rockwell Automation recommends users upgrade to corrected firmware revisions. CISA advises implementing defensive measures including: minimizing network exposure for control system devices, ensuring they are not accessible from the internet, locating control system networks behind firewalls and isolating them from business networks, and using secure methods like VPNs when remote access is required (CISA Advisory).
