NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2023-40474 is a heap-buffer overflow vulnerability discovered in the MXF file demuxer component of GStreamer Plugins Bad versions prior to 1.22.6. The vulnerability was identified and reported on August 9, 2023, and publicly disclosed on September 27, 2023. The flaw affects the parsing of MXF video files with uncompressed video content (GStreamer Advisory, ZDI Advisory).

The vulnerability stems from improper validation of user-supplied data during the parsing of MXF video files, which can result in an integer overflow condition before buffer allocation. This flaw has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H.
